How Long Does It Take for An Oven to Cool Down? (We TESTED It!)

The oven door slams shut. You’ve finished cooking dinner, and you’re ready to enjoy a nice meal with your family.

But wait—the house is hot! What’s going on? Why is it so hot in here?

Well, it’s because your oven was running for a while and now it needs to cool down before you can open the door and see what’s inside.

It might seem like this would be simple, but there are actually quite a few factors at play when determining how long it takes for an oven to cool down.

What is the cooling time for an oven?

The cooling time for an oven depends on the model and how frequently the door is opened.

We tested the cooling time for an oven at 350 degrees Fahrenheit and found that it took between 30 and 60 minutes for the oven to cool down after turning it off from a cooking session.

We tested the experiment 3 times and found that the more often we opened the door or leave it open, the sooner it got to a suitable cooler temperature.

How long does it take for an oven to cool down from 350°F?

On average, it takes an oven about 30 minutes to cool down from 350°F to 75°F.

However, this time can vary depending on the size and type of oven, as well as the surrounding temperature. Some ovens have a self-cleaning cycle that can take up to four hours to complete.

What are the factors that affect cooling time?

It’s either a gas or electric oven

Whether you own a gas or an electric oven each has its own factors that affect cooling time.

If it’s a gas oven, the time it takes to cool will be affected by the type of gas used. If it’s an electric oven, the time it takes to cool will be affected by the type of element used.

But ultimately, they are both really similar since it all depends on the temperature at which the oven ends up before shutting off the power. There’s very little difference at this point.

The size of the oven

The size of the oven is one of the most important factors. A larger oven will take longer to cool down than a smaller one.

The type of food being cooked

For example, a roast will take longer to cool down than a cake. The thickness of the food also affects the cooling time. A thick roast will take longer to cool down than a thin one.

The desired level of doneness also affects the cooling time. A rare roast will cool down faster than a well-done one.

Foods that are high in fat and sugar will take longer to cool down than leaner foods.

This all depends on whether or not you leave your food in the oven after cooking for a short period of time.

The environment

The ambient temperature and humidity also affect the cooling time. If it is very hot and humid, the oven will take longer to cool down.

The insulation of the oven

One of the most important factors that affect cooling time is the insulation of the oven.

If the insulation is poor, the heat will escape and the oven will take longer to cool down. Another factor is the size of the oven.

The built-in fans of the oven

Unsurprisingly, some ovens have built-in fans and those fans are in charge of circulating the hot air in the oven as well as cooling down the oven.

The most powerful and efficient the fans, the better they are cooling down your oven after you’re done cooking.

What are the consequences of an oven not cooling down?

When you are using your oven to cook, there is both a heating time and a cooling down period. If your oven does not cool down, there are some issues that you need to look for.

  • Your oven is likely broken. If your oven does not cool down when you turn it off or when you adjust the controls, your oven may have a control board that is not functioning properly.
  • It can cause damage to the oven. If your oven stays at a constant heat, it can damage the enamel, the heating elements, the glass of the door, and more.
  • It can cause a fire if left unattended.
  • It uses a lot of electricity.
  • It can increase the temperature in your kitchen.

How can you troubleshoot an oven that doesn’t cool down?

If your oven doesn’t cool down, there are a few things you can do to troubleshoot the issue.

  • Check the airflow around the oven. If the airflow is blocked, the oven will take longer to cool down.
  • Check the door seal. If the door seal is damaged, the oven will not be able to retain heat and will cool down more quickly.
  • Check the thermostat. If the thermostat is set too low, the oven will not be able to maintain a consistent temperature and will cool down more quickly.
  • Check the heating element. If the heating element is damaged, the oven will not be able to generate heat and will cool down more quickly.

If you are still having trouble with your oven, you may need to call a repairman.

What should you do if your oven doesn’t cool down?

If your oven doesn’t cool down, there are a few things you can try:

Check the vents

Make sure the vents aren’t blocked by debris. Make sure to clean these vents thoroughly and looked into them to see if there is any blockage.

Check the fan

The fan may need to be replaced if it’s not working properly.

If there’s something wrong with your fan, it won’t blow out the hot air from your oven. Making sure it’s working properly is an important part of getting hot air out.

Check the thermostat

The thermostat may need to be replaced if it’s not working properly.

Check the seal

This is probably the last thing on your mind but the seal around the oven door may be working too well.

You might experience something like this after replacing the seals or the gaskets around the door.

It’s important to understand that this is not really a problem but more of the seal being too good.

In most cases, I would advise just to leave this part alone and see if the other tips above can be improved to let out the hot air.

What are the most common causes of an oven not cooling down?

The number one most common cause of an oven not cooling down after it has been turned on is a control panel that is not working properly.

It may also be that your electricity is not functioning properly or that there is some other defect with the oven itself.

What happens to the temperature when the oven is turned off?

When an oven is turned off the temperature will gradually go down until the oven is completely cooled.

If there is no heat source that is keeping the temperature elevated, the temp will drop slowly in the first few minutes, then rapidly as it gets back to the temperature of the room.

When the oven is left on, it will continue to heat to the temperature that it is set to.

You can accelerate the cooling process by opening the door of the oven to help get the temperature inside the oven to the same temperature as the room.

Will food still cook if the oven is off?

You can cook food a little more by leaving it in the oven as it cools.

This does not mean that you can leave mostly raw meat in the oven and the residual heat will finish cooking it, but you can finish cooking something that is nearly done by leaving it in the oven as it cools.

If you are depending on residual heat to finish cooking something, you do need to ensure you leave the door closed and do not open it until the oven is totally cooled down.

Should you leave an oven door open or shut?

Depending on the situation, if you want the oven to cool down rapidly and you do not have pets or small children that might hurt themselves on an open door, you can leave it open to cool faster.

If you do not want to raise the temperature of the kitchen you may want to leave it shut.

Which temperature level indicates that your oven is cooled down?

When you are trying to get your oven to cool down, the best way to know that the oven is cool is to place a thermometer that has an outer reading so that you can keep track of the temperature inside.

A probe thermometer is a good option in this case as you can place the actual thermometer inside and have the readout on the outside of the oven.

If you leave the oven for a time and open the door to find that the internal temp is nearly that of the room, it is likely that the oven has cooled down.

Is it safe to keep the oven door open for a faster cool-down process?

If you are looking to cool your oven down quickly and you live alone or are home alone with no pets, there is relatively no danger in leaving the oven door open to cool.

You may not want to leave it fully open, but leaving it open a crack is not going to be dangerous.

If you have small children, pets, or elderly people that either live with you or that will be near the open oven door, it may be safer to leave the door shut to prevent injury.

Is it safe to open the oven door to help it cool down?

Under certain circumstances, it is safe to open the oven door to help the oven cool down faster. If you are at all hesitant or if you are at all wary of leaving the door open, you should leave it shut.

Is it safe to leave the house while the oven is cooling down?

It is always best to wait until your oven has cooled down before you leave the house just to be certain that it has cooled down and that there are no issues with it.

It is always best to ensure that your oven is off, cooled down and that it is working properly before you leave the house.

How can you keep an oven warm after turning it off?

You can keep your oven warm for a little longer by leaving the door shut after you turn off the oven.

Opening the door, even a little is going to let out any of the hot air that you have built up by heating the oven.

This is not going to keep the oven hot forever, but it will help to keep it hot for a little while longer so that you can use that residual heat to keep the food warm inside.
