Do Air Fryers Emit Radiation? (Safety Concerns and Beyond)

I know you’ve heard countless news about how some of the devices in your kitchen can cause cancer, namely your microwave. But, have you ever wondered if air fryers emit radiation?

Dissimilar to a microwave oven, an air fryer does not use the same type of radiation. A microwave uses EMF –electromotive force. An air fryer is a nuclear reactor type of cooking device. Therefore, the answer to your question is “no”. An air fryer doesn’t use the radiation a microwave oven uses to cook. These ovens are more like the convection oven, which cooks by circulating hot air.

Can air fryers cause cancer?

Air fryers may significantly lower your chances of getting cancer if you choose the right one for you. However, cooking with an air fryer might create potentially toxic carcinogenic chemicals known as acrylamides. This chemical is a crystalline, white, odorless solid that melts at 84-86 degrees Celsius temperatures. However, you can lower the risk of creating acrylamides by cooking for a shorter time. It is recommended to only cook food until it reaches a light golden color.

What causes cancer?

Carcinogenic compounds known as acrylamide are one of the primary cancer-causing agents. This chemical is created when food is cooked at a high temperature–such as when you deep fry.

The body converts acrylamide into glycidamide, which is capable of creating a mutation or damage to the DNA. This is what causes cancer to form in the body.

Radiation and how to detect it

The human body cannot detect radiation. It needs a number of instruments to locate the whereabouts of radiation.

The Geiger-Mueller (GM) tube is the most common tool used for the detection of radiation. This device is gas-filled and creates an electrical pulse while it interacts with radiation when it is present. Another tool for the detection of radiation is called a MicroR meter.

Most consumers do not know about these instruments, much less how to work them, so they are not often found in the home.

How does an air fryer’s radiation concern compare to a microwave?

Unlike a microwave, an air fryer does not put out radiation. Microwave ovens cook with electromotive force (EMF).

Air fryers cook using a nuclear reactor, which does not utilize the same kind of radiation. People avert from cooking with microwaves because of the potentially detrimental side effects. For this reason, many are choosing to air fry their food.

How does an air fryer’s radiation concern compare to a deep fryer?

An air fryer does not use radiation to cook as a microwave oven does. Instead, the air fryer cooks in much the same way as a convection oven does.

Instead, it circulates heated air around the food that has been lightly covered with oil. Essentially, food is cooked using radiated heat, not radiation.

Effects of air fryers on human health

There is still a chance that air fryer cooking may create acrylamides. Yet there are heterocyclic amines and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons that are the result of cooking meat at a high temperature.

According to the National Cancer Institute, these compounds are associated with the risk of cancer.

Will air fryers make you sick?

Cooking with an air fryer is a much healthier option than traditional frying of food. However, this does not mean an air fryer is the healthiest cooking choice. An air fryer can still create compounds that are harmful, such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and heterocyclic amines.

These chemicals are the result of cooking meat with high heat, which links them to the cause of cancer cell development.

Are air fryers BPA-free?

Air fryers are made out of plastic with a metal inner basket. Although some air fryers use a bisphenol-A (BPA-free) chemical, there is proof these BPA-free options may also cause damage.

Do air fryers contain lead?

There is no real evidence that an air fryer contains lead. On that same topic, an air fryer is non-toxic, Air fryers create results that are similar to that of a deep fryer, sans the calories and dangerous compounds.

Overall, air fryers are a healthier way to cook than a deep fryer is. It is fried food. Just remember to consume fried foods moderately.

Can you get Salmonella or E-Coli from an air fryer?

According to a USDA public health alert, foods that are raw, breaded, pre-browned, frozen, or chicken products that are stuffed might be at risk when microwaving or air frying them.

However, there is no need to throw away the air fryer. Just be careful when cooking these foods in it.

How do I prevent acrylamide in my air fryer?

An air fryer does not have the same health hazards that a deep fryer has. When reducing the temperatures used to cook, you lower the chance of acrylamide formulating.

This chemical has been studied by the Joint Food and Agriculture Organization/World Health Organization Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA). It was found to cause cancer in the animals in the studies.

The experts from the FDA also participated in the testing. Data was provided from this new research on the risk of acrylamide in humans. If you are cooking potatoes in an air fryer, ensure to soak them in water prior to cooking. The reason for this is because the starch in potatoes produces acrylamides.
