How to Make Hard-Boiled Eggs in an Electric Kettle (Easy Steps & Important Considerations!)

In the name of science, I decided to hard boil eggs in an electric kettle.

I used some sources and instructions that were recommended online for boiling eggs, but instead I replaced a stovetop pot with an electric kettle.

Can you use an electric kettle to boil eggs?

Yes. You can hard-boil eggs in an electric kettle since it is virtually no different from making hard-boiled eggs in a pot on the stove. In fact, the benefit of using an electric kettle is that you can cook faster. However, the main concern you may end up experiencing is having to clean the kettle after every use since boiling food of any sort leaves behind food residue.

If you’re ready, let’s talk about how you would boil an egg in an electric kettle.

How to hard-boil eggs in an electric kettle

You can easily boil eggs in an electric kettle. There are two methods you can use: either boiling them for a set amount of time to get hard-boiled eggs or boiling them for a shorter amount of time to get soft-boiled eggs.

1. Put the eggs in the electric kettle

You can add as many eggs as you want to the electric kettle. Just make sure that the eggs are not too crowded and are able to stay submerged under water, or they will not cook evenly. You don’t want to put too many inside. I would recommend up to five for any medium-sized electric kettle.

Also, I highly recommend not having hot water in the kettle before putting the eggs in it. If you put your cold eggs into hot water, there’s a chance that the sudden temperature increase will crack the egg. You want to ease the temperature up as it cooks.

2. Pour water into the electric kettle

You will notice that I left a step so as to put the water in. This is a good idea because it will help prevent you from having hot water in the kettle already, which may crack the egg due to the sudden increase in temperature. I think this is the best approach. It can really be any type of water. I recommend just regular fresh water from the kitchen sink. No need for any distilled drinking water or anything like that.

In the end, you’re just going to dump it out anyway.

3. Boil the eggs for 8–10 minutes

The perfect temperature to soft-boil eggs is 6-7 minutes. Boiling them for too long will make them difficult to peel, while boiling them for too short of a time may result in eggs that are not cooked all the way through.

The art of boiling eggs has lately come down to a science. Every minute counts. If you’re wondering whether more than one egg will change the amount of time you need to leave your eggs inside the kettle, then don’t worry.

The rule of thumb here is to wait until the kettle starts to boil and then start your timing.

4: Place eggs on ice

You’re probably wondering why it’s a good idea to put your eggs on ice after you’ve cooked them. Well, the reason for this is a bit of a science as well.

Giving your eggs a cold ice bath will quickly stop the cooking process. As the temperature drops suddenly in the egg, the egg itself is supposed to shrink and contract inside the shell. This will likely pull the egg away from the shell. Ultimately, the biggest benefit is that this will allow you to easily peel the shell off without damaging the egg itself.

It’s recommended to leave your eggs in an ice bath for at least 5 minutes.

5. Peel and enjoy your hard-boiled eggs

This is the good part. Just enjoy it.

How to prepare soft-boiled eggs in an electric kettle

Soft-boiled eggs can easily be made in an electric kettle. There’s not much difference here except for the fact that you only need to boil it for 6 to 7 minutes. Any longer and you risk getting a hard-boiled egg, but any shorter and you end up with a runny egg.

Simply place the eggs in the electric kettle and fill it with water. Turn on the kettle and wait for it to come to a boil. Once it does, turn off the kettle and let the eggs sit in the hot water for 6–7 minutes. After that time, remove the eggs from the water, toss them into a cold bath, and enjoy your soft-boiled eggs!

Here are the details below.

  1. Put the eggs in the electric kettle.
  2. Pour water into the electric kettle.
  3. Boil the eggs for 6-7 minutes.
  4. Place the eggs on ice.
  5. Peel and enjoy your soft-boiled eggs.

Can we cook food in an electric kettle?

An electric kettle is a device that is used to heat water and produce boiling water. It is different from a stovetop kettle in that it has an internal heating element, which allows it to heat up more quickly. While they are typically used for boiling water, electric kettles can also be used to cook food.

However, there are a few things you need to keep in mind when doing so. First, the wattage of your electric kettle will determine how quickly it cooks food. Second, not all electric kettles have the same temperature settings, so you may need to experiment until you find one that cooks your food the way you want. Finally, always make sure that the food you’re cooking is fully submerged in water, or else it may not cook evenly.

Is it safe to boil water in an electric kettle?

It is safe to boil water in an electric kettle. In fact, it is the preferred way to do so. Boiling water in a pot on the stove can be dangerous because it can easily boil over and create a hazardous situation.

As long as you don’t place the eggs into boiling water, the risk of cracking the eggshells is minimal. The boiling point for water is 212 degrees Fahrenheit, and most electric kettles reach this temperature or higher. As long as the electric kettle is operated properly, there is no danger of cracking the eggshells. As long as you start the water off cold while the eggs are inside and then turn the temperature up, there is very little risk of the egg shells breaking.

How long does it take to boil eggs in a kettle?

There are several different methods for cooking your eggs the way you like them. Here’s a table that shows the number of minutes your egg needs to be in boiling water in order to achieve the desired texture. Bear in mind that the timer starts right when your water begins to boil.

Time Boiling (in minutes)White and Yolk Description
6White is soft, yolk is completely runny
7White is still soft, yolk is oozy
8White is solid, yolk is like fresh new play dough
9White is solid, yolk like 1 day old playdough
10White is hard now, yolk is like 2 day old playdough
11White is hard still, yolk is dried up
12White is tough and rubbery, yolk is brittle, dry
The following table displays the number of minutes an egg is left boiling and a their descriptions of what’s inside at that point in time.

Why is an electric kettle best for boiling eggs?

  1. Electric kettles are energy efficient. Pedals can consume about 1200 watts to 3000 watts of energy every time they boil water. If you compare this to a stovetop oven with a pot full of water, you’ll likely use up about 4600 watts to bring room-temperature water to a boil.
  2. Electric kettles are fast. If you put about 4 cups of water into an electric kettle, it will take roughly 4.5 minutes to get it to boil. If you compare this to a stovetop burner, it will likely take about 8 to 10 minutes to get 4 cups of water to a boil.
  3. Electric kettles are safer. The chances of a kettle boiling over are very slim. It is designed in a way where steam is released in an upward fashion to prevent injury. A stovetop burner, however, may bring the water to a boil that will spill out of the pot if it’s filled up. This may cause injury to the person cooking. Something that comes to mind is that we do not recommend that you leave the kettle plugged into the outlet. Once you’re done using it, unplug it.
  4. Electric kettles don’t need that much space. Electric kettles are about the size of medium-sized blenders. It doesn’t take up much room, and it can easily be stored away.

Considerations you should know when boiling eggs in an electric kettle

  • Adding salt to the water when boiling eggs in an electric kettle helps to prevent them from breaking. The salt creates a protective barrier around the egg and prevents it from cracking.
  • Choose a kettle without an exposed heating coil. This will help prevent the eggs from burning when they make direct contact with the coil. If you have a kettle with an exposed coil, we recommend avoiding using it completely.
  • Make sure to use cold water when adding the eggs to the kettle. This will keep them from cracking as they cook.
  • Be careful not to let the water come to a full boil too quickly, as this can also cause the eggs to crack.
  • Electric kettles are designed for low-temperature heating (212 degrees Fahrenheit), so they shouldn’t damage the eggshells or cook them too quickly.
  • Make sure to use a timer to track the cooking time; if you leave the eggs in too long, they’ll overcook.
  • Run cold water over the cooked eggs for a few seconds to cool them down before peeling.

Can you make poached eggs in an electric kettle?

You can poach eggs in an electric kettle far more easily than you might imagine. To poach an egg in an electric kettle, the first step is to find the right kettle for the job. If you are poaching inside the kettle and not just using it to heat the water, you need a kettle with a large enough mouth so that you can put the egg in without it touching the sides of the kettle and without it getting stuck. After you choose the right kettle, you want to bring the water up to a gentle boil. To help keep the egg together and make a tightly poached egg, add a teaspoon of white vinegar to the boiling water. Use a spoon or stir to get the water spinning. Then, you want to crack your egg into the gently rotating water. For a soft poached egg, you want to leave it in the water for two minutes; for a hard yolk, you want to leave it for about four minutes. To remove the egg, pour it all into a bowl or use a slotted spoon to remove the egg.

What happens when you boil eggs for too long?

When you boil eggs for too long, you can cause the egg to crack and you can cause the egg to become hard and rubbery. This is not going to taste good. It is going to be hard to eat. It is not going to taste great either. If you leave a boiled egg in an electric kettle for too long, you can damage the kettle and you may also burn the eggs.

What happens when you don’t boil your eggs long enough?

If you do not boil your eggs long enough, they are going to be runny, taste terrible, and very undercooked eggs can lead to salmonella. You need to boil an egg for at least five minutes or so to allow it time to cook and the bacteria to die.

Can you boil an egg by just pouring hot water on it?

You can boil an egg by pouring hot water over it. To figure out how to boil an egg by pouring water over it, you should take the time to figure out how the boiling process takes effect. To boil an egg it needs to be heated so that the proteins in the egg can congeal and harden. The longer the egg is left in the water, the harder the egg becomes and the further the proteins congeal. You can boil an egg by just pouring hot water over it. This is not going to get you an egg that is as hard-boiled as one that you leave in boiling water on the stove, but you certainly can boil an egg by pouring boiling water over the top of it.

Does boiling eggs in an electric kettle ruin the kettle?

If you are careful and you pay attention to the time that the eggs stay in the kettle, you are not likely to damage the kettle when using it to boil eggs. If you are going to use an electric kettle to boil eggs, you want to make sure you are using one that does not have an exposed coil at the bottom of the kettle. Those kettles with an exposed coil are going to burn the eggs and may cause damage to the kettle itself. You want to make sure that you are paying attention to how long you leave the egg in for. You do not want to leave the egg in for longer than five minutes or so, as it can burn.

Can you boil eggs in an electric kettle on low (if there is a setting)?

You can boil eggs on low in an electric kettle. This is going to give you eggs that are soft-boiled rather than hard-boiled. You want to make sure that if you are using a kettle on low, you take the time to pay attention to how long the egg is in there and that you do not leave it in there too long. Even on low, the egg can still burn and it can still crack if you cook it for too long.

Do boiled eggs need to be refrigerated?

The CDC says that you do need to refrigerate boiled eggs so that they do not grow bacteria, so that they do not grow bacteria, and so that they do not cause stomach illness. If you are going to eat the eggs right away, or if you are not going to eat them immediately, they should be refrigerated. With eggs that are hard boiled, you have about a week before they need to be disposed of, even if they are refrigerated, as they can go bad and they can make you ill as well. Taking the time to pay attention to how long you have left them in the fridge. You want to eat them within a week to ensure that they are fresh and that they are not going to cause stomach issues.
