How can I troubleshoot a microwave that is overheating?
Feeling for the heat
The simplest approach to checking to see if your microwave is overheating is to place your hand on the side of the microwave that’s behind the control panel.
You can also do this within the chamber of the microwave as well.
There are many components behind the control panel such as the magnetron and the capacitors that could produce a lot of heat if they are malfunctioning or faulty.
Feel for anything that is too hot to leave your hand on long.
Take caution with this method because if it’s too hot, it could burn your hand. In most cases, it shouldn’t be hot enough to burn your hand since there is a wall of metal or plastic between you and the electrical components on the inside.
Check the power cord
The power cord supplies electricity to the microwave.
Check the installation of your electrical cord. If any part of the insulation has been cut away or otherwise damaged, do not use the cord until you have replaced it.
Also, look at the casing around your electrical cord and make sure there are no cracks in it. If there are any cracks in the casing, replace them as well.

Check the fan

Turn your multimeter to diode test mode and connect the test leads to the diode and once again in the reverse order. Record the measurement displays.
If the forward diode displays of voltage drop from 0.5 to 0.8 volts, then it’s ok.
A bad diode reading will read the same in both directions.

In order to test the magnetron, once again you’re going to look for an open circuit using a multimeter.
You need to disassemble your microwave and remove the magnetron assembly completely from the circuit board.
Set the multimeter to the continuity setting. Grab the black and red probe and touch each one to both ends of the plug to hear a beep. If you hear one, that’s good.
To test to see if there are any open circuits outside of the plug, which is a bad thing, touch one end of the probe to the plug and the other end to the body of the magnetron. If you don’t hear any noise, then it’s good.
If you do hear a beep, then it means that you have a short with your magnetron.
If the magnetron is damaged, it can cause the microwave to overheat.
How can I prevent my microwave from overheating?
To prevent your microwave from overheating, you should avoid using it for extended periods of time and make sure that there is adequate ventilation.
Another way to help prevent your microwave from overheating is to keep it clean. Grease and dirt can build up on the vents and cause the unit to overheat. Be sure to wipe down the inside and outside of your microwave regularly with a damp cloth.
Finally, be mindful of how you use your microwave. Don’t overload it or cook food for longer than necessary. These things can cause the unit to work harder than it needs to and lead to overheating.
